SED (Site Equipment Demonstration) is in top gear and going at full throttle in preparation for the forthcoming show at Rockingham Motor Speedway, Corby Northamptonshire from 13th – 15th May 2008. This year’s event is officially the largest SED ever staged in its 42-year history.
UK’s largest working construction show returns to Rockingham Motor Speedway for the third year.

SED stages its largest ever show in 42-years and will bring 21,000 visitors to Corby next week.

As always with the UK’s premier all-action construction event visitors can expect to see the latest product and machinery launches from some of the worlds key industry players.

The show is free to enter for adults and accompanied children over 12 and features not only static displays of construction equipment, but also live demonstrations of diggers digging, crushers crushing, mulchers munching, loaders loading, cranes erecting, and a whole variety of other equipment, which makes up the backbone of the UK’s and Europe’s construction industry.

New at this year’s show will be an additional undercover pavilion, which is home to the new Builders Box Live event, which in partnership with key industry associations including the HAE (Hire Association Europe), FMB (Federation of Master Builders) and the DSA (Drilling and Sawing Association), the event will accommodate suppliers of all essential building products and services and provide a ‘One Stop’ shop for professional builders. There are regular live demonstrations planned and seminars hosted by the HAE. Exhibitors include Hitachi Power Tools, Fein Industrial Power Tools, Hilti, Tyrolit, Husqvarna Construction Products UK, Makita UK, Bonakemi, Ladderfix, Brokk UK, Gerry Rose Construction Sales and Trend Cutting Tools.

Volvo Construction Equipment will showcase representative models from its line up of C range excavators, F series wheeled loaders as well as new models from Volvo compact equipment and Volvo Road machinery.

2008 will be the first time the E. H. Hassell & Sons has exhibited at SED for a number of years and is returning to the show to launch the brand new Sennebogen 608 Multi Crane. This will be the first time the crane has been seen at a UK show and has recently won an SED Award for Excellence.

If demolition, site clearance, or reclamation of construction waste is your game then head straight for the Site Clearance Zone, where exciting demonstrations of the screeners, mulchers and crushers are always a big crowd puller.

The minipump is designed for placing concrete in those places where only a pipeline is needed (or can access) and where there may be restricted access for the vehicle.

Also on the stand will be the company’s Weigh Cell Mixer truck. It is fitted with a patented, weights and measures, approved weighing system, which allows multi-drop deliveries. The cost of the dead time and travel running to and from the mixing plant is substantially reduced.

Other Concrete Zone exhibitors include Xact Mixers, Somero, Mixamate Concrete &Screed, Armcon Cementech and Peri.

Last but by no means least is the SED Pavilion, which is home to almost 100 exhibitors, which help keep the construction industry ‘on the move’. The company is showing its innovative Sylentmite product, which is used for controlled demolition. Exroc is using SED to introduce Sylentmite to the UK market and is looking for distributors.
According to Exroc you can harness the destructive power of nature without the heat, the noise, the explosions, the flying debris and the toxic vapours, by using Sylentmite.
Sylentmite is a calcium oxide based powder with an incredible 20,000-PSI expansive power when mixed with water. Poured into holes, Sylentmite cracks and breaks rocks, boulders, and other stones including reinforced concrete and granite, safely and silently.

Since Sylentmite provides controlled demolition according to the pattern of holes drilled, it breaks reinforced concrete and all kinds of stone in the desired size and shape easily, without noise or vibration.

In demolition, excavating & concrete cutting, Sylentmite helps you break the rock into manageable pieces, giving you the control required to cut off rebar and dispose of it without disturbing or damaging the remainder of the rock.

In mining & quarrying, Sylentmite aids to achieve perfect slabs from limestone, onyx, marble, granite or any other kind of rock being quarried. Compared to blasting, Sylentmite drastically reduces waste or damage to valuable stone.

Sylentmite can be applied with traditional methods also, such as hydraulic breaker, diamond blade saw, or jackhammer to help reduce costs, to save time, and to increase safety.
With its silent operation, Sylentmite is the perfect solution for rock breaking within Schools, Hospitals, Petro-Chem Sites, Airport Areas, and Residential Areas.

SED endeavours to introduce new innovations year on year, and for SED 2008 (13th – 15th May 2008, Rockingham Motor Speedway, Corby, Northamptonshire), in addition to the new Builders Box Live show, SED has joined forces with the DSA (Drilling and Sawing Association) to create the Diamond Zone at SED, an area dedicated to diamond drilling and sawing products, and techniques.
The DSA held its first small specialist show in Coventry last year, the event was a success, and the organisation’s suppliers and manufacturers decided that they should seek to attract a wider audience within the construction industry – hence the SED and DSA union. “The Drilling and Sawing Association and its members see taking our show to SED as a major step forward in the campaign to increase the awareness of the benefits of using drilling and sawing in the construction industry,” said Hugh Wylde, The DSA’s company secretary.

“In keeping with SED’s ethos The Diamond Zone will feature live practical demonstrations of the various techniques associated with drilling and sawing technology,” Wylde reported. “ In addition to attracting the specialist drilling and sawing firms in the construction industry, we are also hoping to attract interest from main contractors, engineers, architects and other professionals in the industry, who may not be aware of the benefits of using these techniques.”

Amongst the exhibitors to secure stand space in the Diamond Zone are DTAS, Gerry Rose, Golz, Husqvarna Construction Products, ICS Blount and Tyrolit.

“The DSA bringing its show to SED is an exciting prospect and great news,” said Mark Bresnahan, SED’s exhibition director. “I believe it’s an area that will grow and I am extremely confident that the Diamond Zone will be a very interesting area, offering visitors to the show the opportunity to see the latest in technology, with working demonstrations, which has become synonymous with SED.”

Camwatch is at back at SED this year after having a tremendous show debut in 2007. The company specialise in security and can save companies bundles of cash with their unique Camwatch TOWER system. At SED 2008 Camwatch will also be launching a new product.
British industry currently spends more than £3bn per year on manned security, and costs are rising from increased regulation and the minimum wage. Camwatch, the UK’s largest commercial CCTV monitoring station, offer construction companies an alternative – an active crime prevention service that never sleeps, simultaneously looks in every direction, and is immune to coercion and bribery – at a fraction of the cost of a single guard!

The unique camwatchTOWER contains everything necessary for effective CCTV monitoring of a construction site. The system can be deployed within two hours, and uses 3G technology to transmit live CCTV incidents to our state-of-the-art control room. Camwatch’s operators control the pan-tilt-zoom cameras, and intruders are warned-off via the integrated PA system. Should the culprits persist, the service is compliant to BS8418, ensuring priority Police response.

Talking to visitors at last year’s show, particularly from the house building industry wanting home security, Camwatch has expanded its product range to include HD CCTV, which is relevant to the high end domestic market. The company has already installed the new system in a number of homes as a direct result from contacts made at SED. This year’s show will see new home security System officially launched to the market.

The Brokk 50, a remote-controlled demolition machine, is the newest and most compact model of the Brokk family. Weighing 1,050 pounds and measuring 24 inches wide, it offers effective operation in restrictive space. It climbs stairs but also fits in most elevators. With a 150-pound hard hitting hammer, it is a serious and safe option to handheld tools.

Also on display will be the Brokk 90, which is one of the most versatile machines available on the market for demolition in confined spaces. It incorporates the best features of previous Brokk models and all the experience gained by Brokk operators and owners and fills the gap between our smallest Brokk 40 and the next size, Brokk 180. When demolishing in confined spaces, size does matter!

Brokk 90 is easy to transport on a trailer or pick-up. It can be driven on floors in residential buildings and transported in a passenger elevator between floors. It can even climb up and down ordinary stairways.

Like all Brokk machines, Brokk 90 is constructed for heavy-duty demolishing work. The hydraulic breaker is the most common attachment but the concrete crusher is becoming increasingly popular. The machine is light and flexible enough to demolish residential buildings but powerful enough to handle industrial environments as well.

Visit Brokk at SED 2008 from 13th – 15th May at Rockingham Motor Speedway, Corby, Northamptonshire.

One consequence is the onset of tinnitus, a condition that affects almost five million people in the UK – a staggering 10% of the adult population.
A person suffering from tinnitus hears ‘noises in the head’, created in the absence of any external sound. The noise may come from one ear, may be in both ears or appear to come from the middle of the head. People often find it difficult to pinpoint exactly where the noise is coming from, and that is because it is not from a sound being heard externally – the ‘noise’ is being created internally but is perceived as a real sound.

The sound of tinnitus varies from one person to another. The noises are usually described as ringing, whistling, buzzing or humming, which can manifest themselves at a range of volumes from low, ambient noise to a level that can seem overwhelming. Some people hear the noise as a low frequency; others find it either medium or high pitched. It can manifest itself as a single noise or two or more components. The noise may be continuous for some people and may come and go for others.

The cause of tinnitus is most commonly linked to frequent and/or prolonged exposure to loud noise, which can damage the auditory system and increases the risk of getting tinnitus or potentially make it worse. However a host of other factors can increase the possibility of getting tinnitus including sudden mental or physical changes i.e. retirement, redundancy, depression, health concerns or bereavement. The onset of tinnitus can either be sudden or become more apparent over time.

The British Tinnitus Association (BTA) is committed to helping everyone in the UK cope with tinnitus: providing advice, support, information and training sessions for those suffering from it – and providing support and research for a cure.

The experienced team at the BTA understands the impact that tinnitus can have on the lives of sufferers and those who live with them, so provides the most appropriate and expert advice and information free of charge - via a free helpline on 0800 018 0527 and online at www.tinnitus.org.uk. The BTA also offers printed information and audio support via post.

If you want to learn about how to protect yourself and your workforce against high levels of noise exposure, or how you can learn to live a full and active life with tinnitus, then come and see the British Tinnitus Association’s experienced team of advisors at SED on stand BL 32 at Rockingham Motor Speedway from 13th – 15th May 2008.

HIPs were introduced by the government in July to cover 4-bed properties, which are mostly freehold properties, meaning creation of HIPs is quite straightforward. But the 3-bed properties include many leasehold properties such as flats.
"Compiling a HIP for a leasehold property is technically and practically much more challenging," said Rob Hailstone, chief executive of HIP supplier Hipag Services. "Most HIP suppliers should be able to compile a HIP for a registered freehold property but it takes years of experience in conveyancing and some real know-how to compile a HIP for a leasehold property quickly and efficiently."

Hailstone warned that not all estate agents or small scale developers would possess sufficient knowledge of the legal subtleties of leasehold properties, and felt that some could be left floundering by the new 3-bed ruling.

Builders Box Live is a show within a show aimed at the small professional builder and trade professional.

Key industry associations supporting Builders Box Live include the HAE (Hire Association Europe), CIWM (Chartered Institute of Waste Management), FMB (Federation of Master Builders) and the DSA (Drilling and Sawing Association).

Builders Box Live will provide a ‘One Stop’ shop where visitors can experience a hands-on event in its own dedicated pavilion. The new 2-storey undercover exhibition area will be the biggest non-permanent ridged structure built at SED, standing a massive 60ft high, complete with its own mezzanine restaurant.

Designed with the ‘end user’ in mind the event will accommodate suppliers of all essential building products and services. There is also an innovation zone planned, highlighting pioneering ideas visitors won't have seen before, and an abundance of live demonstrations of kit and techniques. Builders Box Live will be the essential tool kit for the UK’s local builders.

Ralph Collett, business development manager, from Builders Box Live, said: “Builders Box Live at SED offers manufactures and suppliers a major opportunity to sell and promote to the professional builder and wider construction community with the thousands of visitors expected. With the early support from leading companies and associations helping produce the demonstration programme the show will offer visitors a dynamic and vibrant feel for the three show days."

Other show features will include the Builders Box Challenge where visitors can demonstrate their ability and skill in this live competition. Suppliers will also be able to enter the Safety Awards Zone, where visitors will judge the winners. This Zone will also include an open seminar area where a series of health and safety seminars will run.

Waste management is becoming one of the hottest topics facing the construction industry and the CIWM is ideally placed to advise on the opportunities and challenges this presents. The CIWM will be using the event as a platform to inform the construction industry on the emerging importance of construction waste.

“Through a strategic one-day conference taking place at Builders Box Live, delegates will benefit from information on a range of topics including the hottest current theme of compulsory site waste management plans,” reported Harvey Sugden, business development manager of The Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM).

The HAE is the leading trade association for tool & equipment hirers, the company is looking forward to its partnership with SED’s Builders Box Live Liz Coombes, head of marketing at the Hire Association Europe. said, “This show provides the perfect opportunity for the Hire industry to showcase its products and services to the thousands of visitors from both within the hire sector and also to those end user visitors from the Construction world. This is an important event where our industry can demonstrate the concept and real benefit of Hire to all."

With over 13,000 members, the FMB (Federation of Master Housebuilders) is the largest trade association in the UK building industry. The FMB offers members professional advice and business building services to save them time and money.

Robin Hood-Leeder, FMB’s director of member services, reported that the FMB is delighted to be taking a stand at the Builders Box Live event. “The show promises to provide visitors with plenty of opportunities to see many of the new products up close and to try out some of the latest tools and equipment,“ he said.

“It is designed to attract the small and medium-sized builders, which is the sector of the industry that we want to meet with. As well as encouraging visitors to enter for the FMB Master Builder of the Year awards, the show will provide an excellent opportunity for the FMB to encourage more builders and specialist tradespeople to join the FMB.”

Builders Box Live is supported by www.buildersbox.co.uk, which was launched in July of this year and is the leading website for the small professional building providing need to know information, from the latest products and equipment, to advice on legal and financial matters. The site is quickly becoming the online community for local builders and trades, and a natural launch pad for an event dedicated to this busy sector.

TV presenter Sarah Beeny presented the award to builder Mark Gaul and his team for their work transforming a previously derelict Chapel into a light, modern home with a stunning all glass room overlooking a hillside stream.
The Master Builder of the Year Awards, now in its eighth year, is organised by the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), the UK's largest building trade association. These annual awards celebrate the outstanding work delivered by the vast majority of builders who can only be nominated by highly satisfied clients.

Speaking at the Awards ceremony, FMB director general, Richard Diment said: "This year we have seen a greater range of projects than ever before, but also far more widespread use of energy efficient and renewable materials - this strikes at the heart of the FMB's determination to 'Build a Greener Britain'.

"The relationship between client and builder is fundamental to the success of every building project and it is heartening to see so many builders basing their business on the traditional qualities of politeness, trust, consideration and courtesy. These Awards celebrate builders who show excellent customer service, combined with exceptional professional skills. Again this year we have found an abundance of projects meeting these criteria," Richard added.

"Our congratulations go to Mark Gaul and his team at Bybridge Construction for this well-deserved award, but equally our thanks go to Victoria Hunt who appreciated their excellent work," said Richard.

Mark Gaul and Bybridge Construction win the Nissan Light Commercial Vehicle of their choice, worth up to £20,000. Victoria Hunt wins the holiday of her choice worth £3,000. This is in addition to the luxury all-inclusive weekend breaks for two that both the builder and the clients have won at any of the UK Paramount Group of Hotels.

That's the message from the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), which has launched a 'green mission to help people understand more about energy efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of their home.
The good news, says the FMB, is that most measures people can take are cheap.

Top comes insulation - for the roof, walls and floor. Increasing loft insulation costs just a few hundred pounds and can pay for itself in less than a year. Cavity wall insulation can reduce heating bills by up to a third, with a payback time of around 3 years. Insulating the floor costs less than £200 and pays for itself in around 4 years. Added together, for a typical 3 bedroom home, these measures can cut CO2 emissions by more than 2 tonnes and reduce energy bills by around £250 every year.

"Our message is 'insulate before you generate'," said Brian Berry, the FMB's Director of External Affairs. "It's not just new-build 'eco' homes that can be green; for a small investment efficiency improvements can be easily added to any building."

As well as insulation, the FMB suggests homeowners consider replacing ageing boilers - the latest models reduce gas consumption by more than a third - and fitting double glazing, which halves heat loss through windows.

All of these improvements have a faster payback time than micro-generation schemes, such as solar panels and wind turbines. For example, solar water heating typically costs £3,000-5,000, saves £40 annually and reduces CO2 by 350kg. A badly insulated home will quickly lose any energy created, so the FMB's advice is to insulate first.

Further detail on this energy saving advice is provided in the new "green" issue of the FMB's Essential Guide to Home Improvement.

Entrepreneurs in the building and construction sector fear the extension to holiday entitlement for UK workers will hit their profit, according to a new study.

The research shows that some 60% of builders who run their own business think the new legislation will reduce their bottom line. Almost 60% that it will slow workplace productivity, reports the study by entrepreneur think tank, Tenon Forum.

The new regulations come in to effect today (1 October) and increase the minimum holiday entitlement from 20 days a year to 24 days. In April 2009, minimum holiday entitlement will rise from 24 days to 28 days.

One in seven UK construction bosses currently offer staff an average three to four weeks’ annual leave a year, with nearly half (47%) providing four to five weeks. Just 23% provide five to six weeks holiday.

Two thirds of builders surveyed say more holiday would make staff healthier and happier, but just 37% believe the culture in their workplace would be improved.

Despite their fears, 80% of owner managers in the construction industry cite work life balance as a priority for their business and are embracing it. Over half (56%) of these offer their staff flexible working hours, a fifth allow home and remote working, and 48% hold regular company social events. Nearly a quarter (23%) give employees time off to undertake voluntary work.
