Free asbestos helpline for FMB's London members

London's builders can now get free advice on the safe management of asbestos, after the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) set up a helpline with asbestos specialist Shield Environmental Services.

The helpline will provide the FMB's London members with information about the latest regulations relating to asbestos in the built environment, including advice on its detection, management and safe removal.

"The helpline was inspired by a series of free Uncovering Asbestos workshops organised by Shield in London, which were a massive success," said FMB London director Iain McIlwee.

"We hope to roll the scheme out to FMB members nationwide," added Shield technical director Ian Hewer.

FMB members can access the helpline on 0844 669 1185, or email questions to fmb@shieldenvironmental.co.uk.

Over 3,500 people in the UK suffer from asbestos-related diseases each year, according to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE).
