Builders to benefit from HIPs green grants

Local builders are likely to benefit from a new grants scheme announced this week to help home owners improve the energy performance of their homes.

The scheme, linked to the introduction of Home Information Packs and Energy Performance Certificates, offers home owners grants of £100 to £300 for loft and cavity wall insulation.

The grants are funded by six major energy companies, who are investing £2.5bn in green grants over the next five years. Home owners will be able to access the grants when they sign up to contracts with the energy suppliers.

The scheme also features an interactive section on the Energy Saving Trust's website where home owners can tap in their postcode to find out details of grants available.

Federation of Master Builders spokesman Brian Berry said: "The government's emphasis on reducing carbon emissions has been on new build so this initiative is a step on the long journey to make our existing homes greener and fit for purpose."
