Loft conversions: FMB campaign gains support

The Federation of Master Builders campaign against new government proposals on loft conversions has been given a welcome boost with support from online construction directory The Construction Centre.

The FMB claims that the government's planning white paper, released in May, will make it harder to carry out loft conversions.

The white paper contains a 'low impact' clause, which states that "developments considered to have more than a low impact on the wider neighbourhood and/or street scene would require specific planning permission from the local authority".

The paper also states that planning permission will be required for any loft conversion where the rear dormer window is more than 1m down from the ridge and 1m up from the eaves. However, this does not take into account the majority of UK houses.

The FMB argues the white paper would effectively wipe out 95% of loft conversions across the UK, as the planning process will become too costly and lengthy. Currently, most loft conversions do not need planning approval.

"Loft conversions improve quality of housing stock, increse insulation levels, reduce carbon emissions, and increase fire safety," said FMB director Brian Berry.

The Construction Centre said it fully supported the FMB's position against the white paper proposals.
