    Single/ Double Pole Switch

Can one of you smart guys out there explain to me (in simple layman's terms please !) the difference between a single and a double pole switch .

I need to fit one to support a new shower unit and whilst I can easily get one marked as 'double pole', I'd really like to understand the significance of what that means.

Also, the shower will run off the hot water tank supply (not an 'instant heat' type model) and the instructions say to wire to a '3 amp switched fuse spur box'.
Does a spur sound OK or would extending the ring main be a better option ?
Should I also have a ceiling switch cord to power it off and on in addition to the above or is that unecessary ?
    Questions questions !!!
    Many thanks for your help.

That's discussed on this thread on ebuild: http://www.ebuild.co.uk/forums/messages/770/2311.html
